Sword Series

Originally published under the Alan Savage name, the Sword Series links members of the Brand and Warrey families through the conflicts of the 1930s and the Second World War. Harry Brand begins as a medical orderly in Ethiopia, and later volumes follow the fall of Singapore and Burma, captivity after St Valery and intelligence work in the Western Desert.

The final three books centre on John Warrey’s operations against Italian and German forces, the attempt to remove Rommel and the organisation of Italian partisans before the invasion of Sicily. Medicine, escape, espionage and marriage provide different tests of the same military inheritance: the demand to save lives while serving institutions designed to take them.
