Axis Occupation of Greece

Axis forces occupied Greece after the German invasion of April 1941. Germany, Italy and Bulgaria divided the country into occupation zones, while the Greek government and King George II went into exile. Requisitioning, blockade and economic collapse contributed to severe famine, particularly during the winter of 1941–42.

Occupation authority relied on military force, local collaborators and collective reprisals. Jewish communities were persecuted and deported, with the destruction of the large Sephardic population of Thessaloniki among the most devastating episodes. Italian surrender in 1943 brought expanded German control and further violence.

Historical fiction uses occupied Greece for stories of divided friendship, island communities, resistance networks, collaboration and reprisals. Simon Scarrow’s Hearts of Stone places personal relationships on Lefkas inside the conflict between German occupation forces and Greek resistance. The setting is especially useful for novels about civilians whose loyalties are tested by hunger, fear and intimate knowledge of the occupying soldiers.
