The 27th Penal Regiment is sent through Greece, Yugoslavia and Albania, where difficult terrain, partisan warfare and collapsing supply arrangements make movement as dangerous as battle. Sven, Porta, Tiny and their comrades cross mountains and dry country while water and food disappear. The unit’s accumulated experience offers little protection against thirst, ambush and the desperation produced by a campaign far from reliable support.

Rather than reconstructing one named battle, the novel evokes the wider violence of Axis occupation and anti-partisan warfare in the Balkans. Adolf Hitler’s expanding war has carried the regiment into communities where occupation, resistance and reprisal overlap. Hassel’s black comedy becomes increasingly bleak as the men consider robbery and murder for basic necessities, revealing how quickly military cohesion fails when survival is reduced to possession of water.
