Simon Scarrow writes accessible military historical fiction, especially Roman army novels driven by campaigns, discipline and battlefield danger.

Simon Scarrow was born in Nigeria in 1962 and spent parts of his childhood in several countries before settling in Britain. He worked in the civil service, studied at the University of East Anglia and trained as a teacher. He later taught history and lectured in further education, experience that contributed to his clear explanation of military and political contexts.

Scarrow began the Eagles of the Empire series with Under the Eagle in 2000. The books follow Roman soldiers Macro and Cato through campaigns in Britain, the eastern provinces and other parts of the empire, balancing battlefield action with rivalry inside the army and imperial court. Scarrow has also written the Revolution quartet about Napoleon and Wellington, the young-adult Gladiator series and novels set in other periods. His fiction is built around campaigns, comradeship, command and the practical mechanics of organised violence. It is particularly suitable for readers who want accessible military narratives with recurring protagonists and a broad geographical view of Roman imperial operations.
