Tiberius succeeded Augustus after a long military and political career. His relationship with the Senate was often tense, and the popularity and early death of Germanicus complicated the future of the dynasty.

The praetorian prefect Sejanus accumulated exceptional authority while Tiberius lived away from Rome on Capri. Sejanus's fall in AD 31 led to further prosecutions and executions.

I, Claudius uses Claudius's supposed obscurity to place him close to these events while allowing him to survive the destruction of more prominent relatives.
