Lindsay Powell is a British historian and writer specialising in the political and military history of the ancient world, particularly the early Roman Empire. Raised in Cardiff, he developed an interest in Roman history through the nearby forts and archaeological collections at Cardiff and Caerleon. He is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, serves as news editor of Ancient History and Ancient Warfare magazines, and regularly contributes to historical podcasts and publications. His experience also includes participation in the Ermine Street Guard Roman re-enactment society.
Powell’s books concentrate on Roman commanders, imperial warfare and figures whose achievements have often been overshadowed by more famous rulers. His biographies include Eager for Glory, about Drusus the Elder; Germanicus; Marcus Agrippa; and Bar Kokhba, while Augustus at War reassesses Augustus as commander-in-chief and organiser of Rome’s military expansion. He has also written Roman Soldier versus Germanic Warrior and The Bar Kokhba War AD 132–136, examining armies, weapons, leadership and combat on Rome’s Germanic and Judaean frontiers. His work combines literary evidence, archaeology, inscriptions and military analysis to make the campaigns and personalities of the Roman world accessible to general readers.
