Roman Ancient Origins presents the development of Rome from the legendary settlement associated with Romulus through the monarchy, the Republic and the imperial centuries. Its selections cover government, war, religion, urban growth, engineering and daily life, connecting familiar stories of kings, senators, generals and emperors to the institutions through which Rome absorbed Italy and the Mediterranean.

The collection also follows the transformation of the western empire and the survival of Roman language, law, calendar, religion and material culture after political collapse. J. K. Jackson edited the volume and Lindsay Powell supplied the introduction, so the description distinguishes his historical framing from the book’s wider curated contents.
