Author

Livy

-59–17

Livy was a Roman historian of the Augustan period and author of a vast history of Rome from its foundation.

Livy wrote Ab Urbe Condita, a history of Rome from legendary origins to his own age. Only Books 1–10 and 21–45 survive complete, but the surviving text remains central to early Rome, the Republic, the Punic Wars and Rome’s expansion across Italy and the Mediterranean.

For the site, Livy belongs in Classical rather than historical fiction. His works support pages on Roman foundation legend, Republican institutions, Hannibal, Macedon and the moral language through which later Romans interpreted their past.
