The Rise of Rome

Livy’s early Roman history begins with foundation legend and follows Rome through the kings, the early Republic, conflict with neighbouring Italian peoples and the moral examples through which Augustan Rome imagined its past. It is useful for the stories of Romulus, the Tarquins, republican foundation, early wars, social conflict and the creation of Roman civic identity, though it blends legend, tradition and history rather than modern critical reconstruction.
