Appian was a Greek historian of Rome whose works are especially important for Roman civil wars and imperial expansion.

Appian of Alexandria wrote a Roman History organised largely by peoples and regions, with substantial surviving sections on the Civil Wars, Mithridatic Wars, Punic conflicts and Rome’s wars in Spain. He wrote in Greek from within the imperial world.

For the site, Appian is useful for Classical pages on the Roman Republic, civil war, conquest and provincial resistance. His Civil Wars are particularly relevant for fiction about Marius, Sulla, Caesar, Antony and Octavian.
