Sallust was a Roman historian whose works examine ambition, corruption and crisis in the late Republic.

Sallust wrote monographs on the Catilinarian Conspiracy and the Jugurthine War, as well as a fragmentary history. His compact, moralising style presents Roman politics as a struggle between public virtue, personal ambition and institutional decay.
