Cicero was a Roman statesman, orator and philosopher whose writings are central to the final century of the Republic.

Marcus Tullius Cicero rose as a novus homo to become consul in 63 BCE. His surviving speeches, letters, philosophical works and rhetorical treatises are among the richest sources for Roman politics, law, friendship and elite anxiety in the late Republic.
