Julius Caesar was a Roman general, statesman and author whose commentaries are major sources for his wars in Gaul and the civil conflict with Pompey.

Caesar wrote the Commentaries on the Gallic War and the Civil War, presenting his campaigns in a controlled, third-person prose style. The works are political documents as well as military narratives, designed to explain and justify his actions to Roman readers.

He belongs in Classical for pages on the Gallic Wars, Caesar’s Civil War, Roman command and late Republican propaganda. As an author entry, he should sit alongside Cicero, Sallust and Livy rather than only as a linked historical person.
