Classical Greece

480–323 BCE

Classical Greece is the age of the Persian Wars, Athenian democracy, Spartan militarism, the Peloponnesian War, Theban hegemony, and the rise of Macedon. It runs from the early fifth century BC to the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC. This is the Greece of Pericles, Socrates, Thucydides, Alcibiades, Leonidas, Philip II, and Alexander.

The period matters because Greek political and cultural life reached extraordinary intensity while the city-states fought repeated wars. Athens built an empire and produced drama, philosophy, architecture, and democratic politics, while Sparta and other powers resisted Athenian dominance. The eventual exhaustion of the city-states opened the way for Macedonian control and Alexander’s conquests.

Steven Pressfield’s Gates of Fire, Mary Renault’s The Last of the Wine, Christian Cameron’s Long War series, Conn Iggulden’s Athenian novels, and Valerio Massimo Manfredi’s Alexander books all draw on different parts of the period. The fiction ranges across military fiction, political drama, philosophical coming-of-age stories, naval war, plague, exile, and the collapse of civic ideals.
