Aeschylus

Aeschylus was an Athenian dramatist of the fifth century BC and the earliest Greek tragedian whose plays survive in substantial form. A veteran of the Persian Wars, he wrote tragedies including the Oresteia and The Persians, combining mythic material with questions of war, justice and civic order.

Aeschylus was born in Elefsina and died in Gela. He is traditionally said to have fought against the Persians at Marathon and probably at Salamis, experiences that gave his surviving tragedies an immediate connection with the wars that transformed fifth-century Athens.

In Aeschylus’ Prometheus Bound and Other Plays, Prometheus Bound and Other Plays brings together four tragedies traditionally associated with Aeschylus: Prometheus Bound , The Suppliants , Seven Against Thebes and The Persians .
