Battle of Philippi

The Battle of Philippi was fought in 42 BC in Macedonia between the forces of Brutus and Cassius and those of Antony and Octavian. The fighting unfolded in two engagements, ending with the deaths of both leading assassins. The victory avenged Caesar in political terms and reshaped the Roman world.
Philippi mattered because it removed the strongest republican military opposition to the Caesarian faction. It did not bring peace, but it reduced the number of contenders and left Antony and Octavian to divide and eventually contest power. The battle marked another step toward the end of the republic.
