Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa

64 BCE–13 BCE

Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was Augustus’s closest general, administrator and son-in-law. His victories, especially at Actium, and his building projects in Rome made him indispensable to the creation of the Augustan order.

Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa also held the offices or ranks of Roman governor, Roman consul, moneyer, and legatus Augusti pro praetore Syriae. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa belonged to the Julio-Claudian dynasty; Vipsanii Agrippae and operated within Ancient Rome. Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa was born in Istria and died in Campania.

Robert HarrisAgrippa places Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa at the centre of Augustus’s rise, looking back on the campaigns, naval victories and political bargains through which he turned friendship with Octavian into a lifetime of military and administrative service. Richard Foreman’s Augustus: Son of Rome and Augustus: Son of Caesar show the younger Agrippa beside Octavian from the first dangerous months after Caesar’s murder. Alistair Forrest’s Vipers of Rome makes Agrippa the recruiter who sends Titus Macer into Sextus Pompey’s Sicilian stronghold, connecting his naval war to intelligence work on the ground. Lindsay Powell’s Marcus Agrippa examines the historical commander directly, from the defeat of Sextus Pompey and victory at Actium to the building, provincial and dynastic work that made him Augustus’s indispensable partner.
