Fight or Die gathers shorter works drawn from several of Foreman’s historical series. Lucius Oppius is forced into a Roman arena, Rufus Varro’s private indiscretion becomes an intelligence danger, and the veteran Edward Kemp is approached by Bohemond of Taranto on the eve of the First Crusade. The collection also brings Raffles into conflict with Sherlock Holmes and returns to Hollywood through the unlucky screenwriter Pat Hobby.
The stories move across very different periods but share protagonists who survive through improvisation rather than simple heroism. Soldiers, thieves and spies repeatedly discover that private weakness can be as dangerous as an army. The volume works as an introduction to Foreman’s recurring characters while contrasting Roman politics, crusading recruitment, Victorian crime and wartime popular culture.
