Book
God’s Warrior
First published 2019
Ranulph travels with Bohemond’s army through Constantinople and Anatolia towards Antioch, where hunger, factional rivalry and the city’s walls threaten to end the crusade. His knowledge of trade and people makes him a trusted adviser and helps the besiegers find a way inside. The victory reunites him with Mariam, the woman he once hoped to marry, only for the crusaders themselves to be trapped by a relieving army.
The discovery of the Holy Lance restores morale and carries the expedition south to Jerusalem, but the massacre after the city falls destroys Ranulph’s faith in its leaders. Sick and disillusioned, he encounters men forming a religious brotherhood to care for pilgrims and the wounded, the community that will become the Knights Hospitaller. Service offers a different form of holy warfare, though Ranulph must still defend it in a region where conquest has not produced peace.
