Liverpool, 1942. Seventeen-year-old Frankie Franconi meets British officer Nick Harper when a bomb strikes their shelter. Her courage during the rescue and fluent Italian convince him that she could be useful to the war effort, and the Baker Street address he gives her leads to the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry. Within weeks, Frankie enters training and signs an Official Secrets Act whose consequences she barely understands.
Her work takes her from England to North Africa and Italy, decoding messages from agents in the field and supporting intelligence operations close to active campaigns. Wartime parties and romance with Nick exist beside secrecy, betrayal and decisions that may expose people behind enemy lines. Based on the varied duties undertaken by FANY personnel, the novel follows Frankie’s movement from adolescent enthusiasm to an understanding of the personal cost of clandestine service.
