England, 1943. Nancy Callaghan joins the Special Operations Executive and is assigned to the communications problems created by agents working in occupied Europe. Alongside gifted code specialist Tom Lockwood, she helps develop compact systems that can be concealed on silk, but the larger intelligence picture is becoming increasingly alarming as messages from the Netherlands raise fears of compromise.

Suspicion falls close to home, and Nancy must decide whether apparent mistakes point to incompetence, betrayal or a German deception operation. Inspired by the Englandspiel disaster, the first Secret Agent novel turns cryptography into a matter of life and death, showing how a compromised wireless network could place entire resistance circuits at risk.
