After the First Crusade, Hugh de Payens returns from the Holy Land disillusioned by the violence committed in the name of faith. He belongs to an older, secret brotherhood of noble families that believes a dangerous body of knowledge lies beneath the Temple Mount and that the new Christian kingdom of Jerusalem offers a chance to recover it.
Hugh’s public mission becomes the creation of a small order sworn to protect pilgrims, while its hidden purpose draws him into conflict with churchmen, crusader lords and members of his own fraternity. The novel follows the origins of the Knights Templar as religious devotion, military necessity and conspiracy become inseparable.
