William Napier

William Napier is the pen name of British novelist and journalist Christopher Hart. Born in 1965 and educated in Cheltenham, Oxford and London, he writes historical fiction centred on warfare, imperial rivalry and the collapse or transformation of powerful states. His novels are known for combining large-scale military action with political intrigue and detailed portrayals of soldiers, rulers and societies under pressure.

Napier is best known for the bestselling Attila trilogy, which follows the rise of Attila the Hun against the declining Western Roman Empire. He has also written Julia, set during the final centuries of Roman rule, and the Last Crusaders novels, which explore conflicts involving the Ottoman Empire, the Mediterranean powers and Ivan the Terrible. His work presents major historical confrontations through fast-paced narratives that emphasise strategy, leadership and the experience of warfare.
