Battle of Lepanto

The Battle of Lepanto was fought on 7 October 1571 between the Ottoman fleet and the Holy League, a coalition organised under papal authority and led at sea by Don John of Austria. The battle followed Ottoman expansion in the eastern Mediterranean and the crisis around Cyprus.

Lepanto mattered because it was one of the largest galley battles of the early modern period and a major symbolic victory for Christian Europe. It did not end Ottoman power, but it checked naval momentum and became a central image of Mediterranean religious and imperial conflict.
