Hayreddin Barbarossa
c. 1478–1546
Hayreddin Barbarossa was an Ottoman corsair, admiral and ruler whose career helped transform Ottoman naval power in the western Mediterranean. Working first with his brother Oruç and later under Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, he built a base in North Africa and became grand admiral of the Ottoman fleet.
Barbarossa built Ottoman naval power in North Africa and the Mediterranean and defeated the Holy League fleet at Preveza in 1538. Hayreddin Barbarossa was born in Lesbos and died in Constantinople.
