Crimean Tatar Raid on Moscow

In 1571 Crimean Tatar forces advanced into Muscovy and reached Moscow, which was burned during the raid. The attack came during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, when Muscovy was already strained by war, internal terror and frontier insecurity.

The raid mattered because it showed that Muscovy’s expansion did not make the state safe from steppe power. The destruction of Moscow became one of the major crises of Ivan’s later reign and demonstrated the danger posed by the Crimean Khanate and its Ottoman connections.
