Reign of Ivan the Terrible
1547–1584 CE
Ivan IV was crowned tsar in 1547 and ruled during a period of expansion, reform and deep political violence. His reign included campaigns against Kazan and Astrakhan, the growth of Muscovy’s eastern reach and conflict with Livonia, Poland-Lithuania and Sweden.
The reign mattered because Ivan combined state-building with terror. The oprichnina, confiscations, executions and suspicion of elite betrayal reshaped political life and left a lasting image of autocratic rule. External war and internal fear operated together.
The Last Crusaders: Ivan the Terrible places foreign travellers and envoys inside this dangerous court and frontier world.
