Attila’s rise occurs while the western and eastern Roman empires are increasingly dependent on federate troops, negotiated settlements and strong individual commanders. Aëtius understands that Hunnic power can be used against Rome’s enemies even as it becomes a threat in its own right. The novel builds their rivalry from this uneasy interdependence rather than presenting Romans and Huns as permanently separate worlds.
