The final book brings Attila’s power into direct conflict with the Western Roman Empire. As Hunnic armies cross into Roman territory, Attila’s ambition is measured against the resistance of Aëtius and the fragile alliances that still hold parts of the empire together. The novel follows the last phase of Attila’s career, from invasion and battlefield decision to the political and personal limits of conquest.

Attila's invasion exposes the Western Empire's dependence on coalitions it can no longer command outright. Aetius must combine Roman forces with former enemies who fear Hunnic domination more than they distrust Rome. The climax therefore measures two different kinds of power: Attila's ability to compel followers through conquest and Aetius's ability to assemble a temporary alliance strong enough to halt him.
