In the final decades of the Western Roman Empire, imperial authority is weakened by military rivalry, Germanic settlement and the growing power of commanders whose armies are more dependable than the government they nominally serve. The story moves towards the reign of the young Romulus Augustulus, installed by his father Orestes while Italy’s federate troops demand the land and rewards they have been promised.
When Orestes refuses, the soldiers rally behind Odoacer and turn against the regime at Ravenna. The novel follows the political and military breakdown that culminates in Romulus’s deposition in 476, presenting the fall of the Western Empire through men who must decide whether Rome remains a living state, an inherited identity or merely a name used by whoever controls Italy.
