Kingdom of Odoacer

476–493 CE

After deposing Romulus Augustulus, Odoacer governed Italy as king while formally acknowledging the eastern emperor. His government retained much of the Roman civil administration and worked with the senatorial aristocracy.

Relations with Constantinople deteriorated, and Emperor Zeno encouraged the Ostrogothic king Theodoric to invade Italy. Years of war ended with an agreement to share power at Ravenna.
