Attila and Flavius Aetius first encounter one another through the late Roman practice of exchanging noble hostages. Each man learns the military customs and political weaknesses of the other’s world before returning home to build power: Attila among the Huns and Aetius within a Western Empire dependent on fragile alliances and rival generals.
Their former familiarity becomes a strategic contest when Attila invades Gaul in 451.
