In 1192 Richard I's army remains capable of defeating Saladin in the field but is exhausted by campaigning and divided over whether Jerusalem can be captured and held. The approach to the city becomes a test of supply, weather and political will.

The Brotherhood is used where disciplined Templar action might keep the expedition together. The men must weigh the religious goal of the crusade against the practical danger of advancing too far from the coast.

Richard’s problem is strategic rather than simply religious. Jerusalem can perhaps be reached, but holding it would require secure supply lines and a political settlement the crusading army may not possess the unity to maintain. The Brotherhood experiences that dilemma at ground level, where devotion to the expedition’s sacred objective must be balanced against the responsibility not to waste men in an advance that cannot be sustained.
