Death’s Head
In 1190, Roger, an idealistic young monk accused of murder, flees his abbey and joins the crusading movement to the eastern Mediterranean. He becomes part of the company known as the Death’s Heads during the brutal siege of Acre, where battle, disease and starvation strip away any simple idea of holy war. The novel follows Roger’s transformation from fugitive cleric to crusader while testing his faith against the realities of the Third Crusade.
Acre exposes the machinery behind crusading ideals. Armies depend on money, ships, food and fragile cooperation between rival leaders, while disease kills without regard to piety or courage. Roger’s place among professional fighters forces him to compare the language of holy war with the behaviour of men actually conducting it, making faith itself part of his moral crisis.
