Young Cuthbert is drawn from the forests and feuds of England into the Third Crusade. His courage first brings him into conflict with local enemies and then into the household of the Earl of Evesham, where he begins the training that may allow him to win the rank and responsibilities of a knight.

Travelling with the crusading army of Richard I, Cuthbert encounters pirates, siege warfare and captivity before reaching the Holy Land. His adventures place the ideals of chivalry against the realities of feudal rivalry and campaigning, while his advancement depends on loyalty and judgement as much as success in combat.
