Gervaise Tresham, the son of a Lancastrian knight killed after Tewkesbury, is sent to the Knights of St John and grows from page to professed knight on Rhodes. His training places him inside a military order whose galleys patrol the eastern Mediterranean against Ottoman forces and corsairs.

Gervaise’s service brings naval fighting, captivity, intelligence work and command before the Order faces Mehmed II’s great assault on Rhodes in 1480. The novel follows both the disciplined life of the Hospitallers and the practical defence of their island stronghold, making the siege the culmination of a career shaped by the Order’s struggle against Ottoman expansion.
