Beric is a young Briton of the Iceni who has spent enough time among Romans to understand both their strengths and the resentment their rule has created. When the abuses that follow the death of Prasutagus help provoke Boudica’s revolt in 60–61 CE, Beric is drawn into the uprising and the destruction that follows.
Defeat leaves him a Roman captive rather than a dead rebel. Taken to Rome with companions including Boduoc, Beric must adapt to slavery, public spectacle and a society he once knew only as an occupying power. His ability to move between British and Roman worlds gives the novel a perspective on both the rebellion and the imperial system that survives it.
