Reuben Whitney grows up under suspicion in an English village, where a series of petty offences culminates in a false accusation of burglary. Although he is acquitted, the experience leaves him with little reason to remain at home, and he takes the opportunity to begin a new life in Australia.
In the colonies Reuben learns the demands of station work and travel through the bush, where distance and weak policing make isolated settlements vulnerable. Encounters with bushrangers and armed pursuit turn his new life into a test of judgement as well as courage. The story follows his movement from an unjustly accused boy to a capable young man able to confront the people responsible for earlier wrongs.
