Charlie Carstairs is the son of a Jacobite gentleman whose political loyalties make the family vulnerable under William III. When his father is denounced and arrested through a hostile neighbour’s intrigue, Charlie helps expose the plot before leaving England for Sweden, where his fortunes become tied to the young Charles XII.

Serving in the Swedish army during the opening years of the Great Northern War, Charlie experiences the victory at Narva, campaigning in Poland and the hazards of intelligence work, capture and escape. His military service gives him the means and experience to return to England and settle the conspiracy that first drove him into exile.
