Nat Glover is a young Royal Navy midshipman serving in the Caribbean when revolt breaks out in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. A chance act of courage in Cap-Français draws him into the affairs of a colonial family, and the widening rebellion soon leaves him moving between naval duty, rescue missions and fighting ashore.

As the Haitian Revolution develops, Nat encounters shifting alliances among French forces, insurgents, free people of colour and foreign powers. His adventures include piracy, command at sea and contact with leaders such as Toussaint Louverture, while the novel follows the way revolution and international war transform both the colony and the naval conflict surrounding it.
