Templar Stone

by K. M. Ashman Book 2 in the The Brotherhood series.

First published 2019

4.5(1,573)

After Montgisard, Baldwin IV orders a major fortress built at Jacob's Ford to control a strategic crossing of the Jordan. Templars and labourers race to complete the defences while the position threatens Saladin's communications between Syria and Egypt.

Saladin attacks before the castle is finished. The Brotherhood must defend an incomplete stronghold whose strength has been exaggerated by politics and whose survival depends on relief arriving in time.

Jacob’s Ford matters because a permanent castle there would threaten Saladin’s movement between Damascus and his southern territories. Baldwin’s order therefore turns a construction project into a strategic contest, with engineers and labourers exposed before the walls can protect them. The Brotherhood must defend both the site and the time needed to finish it, knowing that delay favours the larger Muslim army.
