Return of the Death’s Heads, Part I
In 1216, Prince Louis of France invades England with the support of barons rebelling against King John. Roger of Huntley would rather see John defeated, but the king forces him into service by holding Ailith hostage. Sent to the Weald to disrupt French supply lines, Roger must damage Louis’s campaign just enough to keep Ailith alive while trying not to betray the political cause he supports.
Roger’s predicament turns the civil conflict into a question of divided duty. He dislikes John and understands the barons’ grievances, yet Ailith’s captivity gives the king direct control over his actions. Disrupting French supply lines means helping a ruler he would rather oppose, forcing Roger to judge how much political principle can survive when the safety of one person depends on obedience.
