Second Triumvirate and Proscriptions
43 BCE
In November 43 BCE Mark Antony, Octavian and Lepidus established a legally recognised triumvirate with extraordinary authority to reorganise the Republic. Their agreement ended an immediate conflict between their armies and redirected force against the assassins of Julius Caesar.
The triumvirs issued lists of proscribed enemies whose property could be confiscated and whose killers were rewarded. Cicero was the most famous victim, but the violence affected senators, equestrians and families throughout Italy.
Caesar’s Avenger follows Antony from Caesar’s murder through the alliance, proscriptions and preparations for Philippi, presenting vengeance as both a personal motive and an instrument of state power.
