Cimbrian War

The Cimbri, Teutones and associated groups moved across central and western Europe and repeatedly defeated Roman forces sent to contain them. Their migrations combined the movement of families and communities with large armed forces, creating a threat that Roman writers portrayed as an invasion of Italy.

The catastrophic defeat at Arausio in 105 BC intensified fear and allowed Gaius Marius to secure repeated consulships and reorganise Rome’s response. Roman victories at Aquae Sextiae in 102 and Vercellae in 101 ended the immediate danger and transformed Marius into the Republic’s dominant military figure.

The opening Sertorius Scrolls novels place Quintus Sertorius inside this war, first as a young soldier and later as an infiltrator gathering intelligence. The setting supports fiction about migration, command rivalry, battlefield catastrophe, military reform and the political power created by emergency command.
