Empire continues the Pinarius family story from Augustus to Hadrian. Five generations live under rulers whose personal households increasingly determine law, status and survival, from Tiberius and Caligula through Claudius, Nero and the Flavians.

The Great Fire, persecution of Christians, the Year of the Four Emperors and the opening of the Colosseum reshape both Rome and the family. Under Trajan and Hadrian the empire reaches its greatest extent, but even effective government remains dependent on the unpredictable power of one ruler.
