Nero Series

Margaret George’s Nero duology reconstructs the life of Rome’s last Julio-Claudian emperor, beginning with a childhood in which imperial blood makes Nero a target and ending with the collapse of his reign. Told largely through Nero’s own perspective, the series follows his passage through the courts of Caligula and Claudius, Agrippina the Younger’s campaign to place him on the throne, and his struggle to rule without becoming another victim of dynastic politics.

Across the two novels, Nero’s love of Greek art, performance and athletics is set against the violence of imperial succession, the Great Fire of Rome, political conspiracy and provincial revolt. The series presents him as talented, insecure and increasingly isolated rather than as a simple stock tyrant, while showing how fear, flattery and absolute power steadily narrow the choices available to both emperor and subjects.
