The Confessions of Young Nero

The novel follows Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, the future emperor Nero, from his endangered childhood under Caligula to the opening years of his own reign. Raised for a time away from court, he develops a passion for Greek music, poetry, athletics and performance, but his place in the Julio-Claudian family repeatedly draws him back into danger. When Agrippina the Younger returns from exile, she uses marriage, adoption and court influence to make her son Claudius’s heir, placing him in direct rivalry with Britannicus and binding him to Claudius’s daughter Claudia Octavia.

Nero enters power at sixteen under the guidance of Seneca and Burrus, yet he must also resist his mother’s expectation that she will rule through him. His attachment to the freedwoman Claudia Acte, his hostility towards his arranged marriage and his fear of the precedents set by Caligula and Claudius shape a young ruler trying to preserve both his life and his identity. The book covers Nero’s rise and early transformation, showing how survival within the imperial household turns suspicion and self-protection into increasingly ruthless political choices.
