Britain, AD 52. Cato leads troops into the mountains to strike a Druid stronghold while the wounded Macro remains in command of a vulnerable fort. Winter weather, difficult supply and misjudged intelligence threaten Cato’s expedition, and signs around the garrison suggest the British are concentrating for a coordinated attack. Separated from one another, the two officers must recognise the enemy’s plan before each Roman force is isolated and destroyed.
The split command gives the campaign two different military problems. Cato faces terrain, weather and an elusive enemy in the mountains, while Macro must judge whether the fort’s apparent quiet is actually preparation for assault. Their separation exposes the vulnerability of an occupying army that must hold fixed positions and conduct offensive operations at the same time.
