Caratacus

15–54

Caratacus was a British ruler, probably of the Catuvellauni, who led resistance to the Roman invasion begun in AD 43. After defeats in south-eastern Britain he continued the struggle among the peoples of Wales until Queen Cartimandua of the Brigantes handed him over to Rome.

Taken to Rome with members of his family, Caratacus was displayed before the emperor Claudius after years of resistance. Tacitus records a defiant speech in which he argued that Rome would gain more honour by sparing a formidable enemy than by killing him. Claudius granted clemency, but the surviving sources provide little reliable information about Caratacus’s later life.

Douglas Jackson’s Claudius casts Caratacus as one of the principal British leaders resisting the invasion of AD 43, so the emperor’s carefully staged campaign and triumph are measured against an opponent capable of keeping resistance alive after the first Roman victories. David Boyle’s Crown of Thorns follows Caratacus into the harder years after the invasion, when survival depends on holding together opposition as Rome consolidates the south. Rosemary Sutcliff’s The Eagle’s Conquest brings him into the campaigning world of the Roman legions, while David Boyle’s The Rise of Caratacus makes the growth of his authority and the creation of a wider resistance the main subject. Griff Hosker’s Warlord of Britannia uses the same struggle from a soldier’s viewpoint, showing how Caratacus’s ability to retreat, regroup and seek new allies turns conquest into a prolonged war rather than a single invasion season.
