Roman Trilogy

The Roman Trilogy follows Rufus, a young slave whose skill with animals brings him from the gladiatorial world into the dangerous centre of imperial power. In Caligula he becomes keeper of the emperor’s elephant and is caught among the conspiracies surrounding a ruler feared for cruelty and unpredictability. Claudius then sends Rufus and the elephant with the Roman invasion force bound for Britain.

Seen through a servant with little formal power, the novels connect palace politics, arena culture and military conquest. Rufus must survive the ambitions of emperors and courtiers while retaining responsibility for the animal entrusted to him, giving the sequence an intimate perspective on the reigns of Caligula and Claudius and the opening phase of Rome’s conquest of Britain.
